Hi, I’m

Johan Vosloo

Coming home after twenty years away is something you feel in your bones. It is more than returning to familiar soil. It is a reconnection to the place that shaped you, to the things that matter most, and to the parts of yourself that never really left.

For me, those years in Taiwan gave me a great deal. They shaped me as a photographer, but through all that time, one thing remained constant: my love for dogs.

Dogs have been in front of my lens for almost as long as I have been taking photographs. For around twenty years, they have been part of my life and my work. During my time in Taiwan, I spent much of those years photographing shelter dogs that were up for adoption, always hoping that a single image might help a dog be seen differently, and perhaps help them find a home. That experience stayed with me. It taught me that photographing a dog is never only about appearance. It is about presence, spirit, resilience, and the quiet beauty of a life that matters deeply.

One of those dogs became my own.

Thula came into my life in Taiwan when she was still a puppy. She is a rescue dog, and for almost eight years she has been by my side — my companion, my constant, and my best friend. When I returned to South Africa just over a year ago, I brought her home with me. She has been part of this journey through every chapter, and in many ways, she represents everything I love most about dogs: their loyalty, their heart, their individuality, and the way they leave themselves imprinted on our lives.

That understanding is at the heart of Hound & Halo.

PHOTOGRAPHY TURNS LOVE INTO SOMETHING VISIBLEA QUIET TRIBUTE TO THE DOGS WHO WALK BESIDE US.

It’s a language that doesn’t require words, yet it can convey powerful messages. Photography allows us to stop time, preserve beautiful memories, and share them with others.

My work is rooted in the belief that dogs are not simply pets. They are companions, witnesses to our lives, and beloved family members. They carry joy, devotion, gentleness, mischief, dignity, and soul. Some arrive in front of the camera full of energy and character. Others carry a softer, quieter kind of wisdom. What moves me most is that each one brings something entirely their own.

Photography, for me, has always been a way of honouring what might otherwise pass too quickly. A glance. A posture. A flicker of personality. The feeling of who they are, not just what they look like. With patience, empathy, and a fine art approach to light and composition, I create portraits that are meant to hold onto that presence in a way that feels both beautiful and deeply true.

Hound & Halo is about more than creating images. It is about creating something lasting. Artwork that celebrates the bond between people and their dogs. Artwork that belongs on your walls not only because it is beautiful, but because it means something. Because the dogs we love leave their mark on us in ways that are impossible to measure, and never long enough.

This work is, in many ways, the meeting point of everything that has shaped me — coming home, a lifelong love of dogs, and a belief in photography as a way of turning love into something visible.
